I just wish the marketing and advertising department of the car companies here in the Philippines are as creative and as hilarious as these ones. It’s competitive, yes, but somehow I get the feeling that these companies enjoy what they are doing. This is exactly the kind of ads I’d want to see along EDSA. All I see whenever I get stuck in traffic are billboards of those half naked men trying to upsell some cheap cologne or over-priced underwear. Or various celebrities inviting us to look “perfect” like them by undergoing cosmetic surgery. Then we see another set of celebrities doing the same for another cosmetic surgery clinic. Tsk. Superficial I tell you. Just goes to show what we value nowadays, eh?
All the local ads we see are for consumer goods directed towards the target market’s superficial “well being”. They don’t even talk about the product or the service anymore. It’s all body and a little piece of logo in the corner and that’s it. Not even a tagline that says something awesome about your product. Well I *intentionally* don’t get your ads, Mr. and Ms. Brand Managers. All I see is male celebrity wang and I don’t even want to be anywhere near that. So yeah, advertising FAIL. Heck, even the politicians beat you come election period when it comes to these things. They have their face and they have a little something there to actually do some brand awareness. You can’t rely on mindshare alone if you don’t even know how to make it happen.
On the other hand, these ads have been circulating around the net for a while now. These guys are different. Because unlike the ads here, they talk about their product and more importantly, they have a sense of humor. I just felt it was appropriate to repost them here since I came across another ad war between Audi and BMW. They seem to love to poke fun at one another. Another priceless set of ads from these brand goliaths.

Audi retaliated.
Let’s see what Subaru had to say…
Subaru felt it was appropriate to join the fun.
But Bentley’s Chairman told everyone to STFU.
Priceless.
Sure, Bently had nothing but an old guy giving you the finger and its little logo below. But hey, it’s all done in “good” taste, yes? I don’t expect you all to agree. For whatever it’s worth, all I’m saying is, the local ads we see could do a whole lot more than just show some awkwardly posed bored-looking celebrity. C’mon guys. You have can do a whole lot better than that. We’re Filipinos and Creativity runs in our blood. Let’s see you guys take a shot at awesomeness.
hahaha
you know you do have a point…
i know a lot of good folk in the advertising business but i never really got along to asking them why they never did say what makes their products superior to others…
hehe…i guess the strategy in this country is to make the image as visually pleasing as possible…so when average Juan decides to buy something, he’ll recall which billboard had the hottest chick on it…hahahaha
Posted by peterpan at April 18, 2009, 1:52 pmActually I don’t get it too. Why most of the ads suck. Yung block and white ad yung sumasayaw sayaw lang sila. Devoid of any, I mean ANY, form of creativity or effect. Example ng nakakabwisit na ad pero sobrang effective allerta. Allerta, allerta. haha pero sobrang effective kasi alam mo kagad e. Allerta.
Posted by chris at April 29, 2009, 10:04 pmWell that’s what people are prioritizing right now. I know it isn’t a good thing but it is already there. Maybe it will subside soon. Or not.
Ad Wars in the Philippines? Meehh.
Posted by jp at May 18, 2009, 12:53 pmi dunno.. would you rather have something like “headon” on local tv? lol

LOL. That’s hilarious and yea, I agree with you on that, there’s more creativity in terms of marketing abroad than there in the Philippines. I told you how dumbstruck I was over the advertisements lingering the billboards and sidewalks of EDSA. Such a shame really. The country has a lot of potential but its capacity to move forward is being diminished by the promotion of excessive superficiality rather than creativity and simple wit.
