Here’s I go again, writing my two cents about random stuff. Ack, it’s becoming a habit.
I’ve been listening to a lot of OPM songs lately. Notably, Francis M., Parokya ni Edgar, The Dawn, Rivermaya and of course, Eraserheads. I have renewed my high regard for these artists. I remember I’d rock out to these guys back when I was still in high school (hmm perhaps even younger) hence regarding my old walkman as one of my most prized possessions back then.
Better than an iPod. No? Well screw you.
I’d listen to them on the radio, or buy their tapes and make my walkman work overtime. I used to be such a fan that the the only rest my walkman gets is when I change its batteries or change tapes.
Who wouldn’t? These guys make timeless music. And that’s probably the reason why they’re still not considered “old school”. Eraserheads’ Pare Ko is something I’d still sing nowadays even if the song is already more than a decade old. (ehem) Rivermaya’s 214 and Parokya ni Edgar’s Harana should be inducted to the all time OPM hits list (if such thing exists). And of course, Francis M.’s patriotic tunes would make any Filipino proud of their roots while discussing socially relevant issues (that are still very much prevalent) infused in his rhymes.
That’s POWER right there ladies and gentlemen.
Then there’s the next wave of awesome OPM bands like Sugarfree (my favorite band), Mayonnaise, Stonefree, Urbandub, Wolfgang, among others. These guys also play great music. I was actually surprised when I found out that even their less popular songs are worthy of an applause. I’m actually proud of these guys for being able to pull off something like this. The fact that they maintained to create and play good music takes a lot of passion especially during these times when the economy isn’t really that cooperative with the music industry. Add to the fact that music piracy is very much rampant in the country. I think we should really start considering of helping our local music industry. Let’s lay off the torrents now. These guys’ make priceless music. And the record labels only charge you a few bucks for quality versions of ‘em.
Awesomeness. My music player is cranking their music ’round the clock.
Now you may be asking what ever happened to my good ol’ AIWA music player? Well, it’s retired now and is comfortably enjoying its retirement inside a box full of smut magazines. Harhar. No its, not. It’s just kept inside a shoe box where I keep my old gadgets. So yeah, no Playboy Mansion for the retiree. Just a regular old folks home where it can sit and relax until the end of days. : )
I liked my old walkman better than my ipod.
I dunno, parang mas masaya e. Plus I had bittersweet memories with my walkman.
@twistedkai : Yep. Like you, I find more connection with my old walkman compared to all the music players I’ve used since. It reminds me of so many good memories. : ) Priceless. : )
